New! Determinate—Another variety contributed to the
tomato world by our friend, expatriate Iraqi seed collector Nael Aziz. He stated that it is a bit unusual for an Iraqi type, because in Iraq the people tend to favor tart tomatoes, while this one is sweeter. Having solid, all-purpose flesh, it will take the heat, like Iraqi types generally. Named for the onetime caretaker of the greenhouses at the Agricultural College at Al Ghraib. Maintained in cultivation in private gardens there since the 1970’s.

What a tomato! Having grown Rouge d'Irak and Al-Kuffa, we expected the vigorous and strong, healthy plants we found growing Abu Rawan last year for seed. The first fruits (~5-6 days) reminded us of Al-Kuffa in their acidic (unbalanced by sweetness) taste, but then the sugars caught up to produce amazing, rich, powerful, classic TOMATO flavor. The size and shape varied from 3 to 7 oz and from smooth and round to slightly ribbed and squat. Abu Rawan kept putting on until frost, being strongly determinate and producing new blossoms the whole season. We can't overstate HOW MUCH FLAVOR this tomato packs. Be taken back to whatever it is that idealizes red tomato taste to you (i.e. tomato soup, sauce, eaten as it is picked, etc.) with this wonderful tomato..
