Inspiring, of course, but also provides great advice Review by Jess

I asked my local library to purchase this book thinking it would be something that I'd like to peruse but I have ended up reading it cover to cover and am purchasing a copy for myself to keep and share.
Of course the story of how Jere Gettle and Baker Creek Seeds started is fun but honestly, this book has the best basic "How to Garden" section I've ever seen. Succinct, good timing advice, organic solutions, plus inspiration. Needless to say, the seed saving advice is top notch, too. I appreciate the "City Farmer" section since the gardening/food movement is expanding in that direction. The individual plant profiles are excellent snapshots of the plant itself and there are growing tips, seed saving tips and kitchen use suggestions. I wish there were more though, and I wish there were suggestions and/or information on different varieties that might be more suitable for different applications.
I'd sum up saying that this is a great book for beginners - and it is - but I've been gardening for over 20 years now and there is no doubt I have learned a lot from this book and I am already planning to take my garden in new directions because of it. So I guess it's just a great book for gardeners! .

This is the best book I have found concerning growing heirloom vegetables. The authors provide a valid and researched history about how our food has changed and been genetically modified throughout the years. This information should have every gardener rethinking what they are planting and consuming.
The photography is great. The photos highlight the vegetables grown by Jere and Emilee Gettle. The simple beauty of their crops shines in the photos.
The planting and growing information for the individual vegetables is practical and concise. There is something in this book for every gardener…from growing heirlooms in containers to a large garden.

This book is excellent. It is useful and practical, but more important, what I love is the history that is given of the different foods- so interesting! It is also beautiful, with vivid pictures of heirloom veggies, with all their unique shapes and colors. Overall, I'd highly recommend this book. .
