Toothache Plant

HB160

(Spilanthes acmella) Pretty yellow and red cone-shaped flowers and leaves have properties similar to Echinacea; said to enhance the immune system, improve digestion and help nausea. The name toothache plant comes from the numbing properties it produces when the leaves and flowers are chewed, and it is used by many herbalists for this purpose. It is a tender perennial but can be grown as an annual in most areas.

Not what I expected Review by Unknown

High germination rate, pretty little plants so far, great root system and was easy to transplant. That being said, we found the “numbing” sensation from chewing the leaves was not what we were expecting. It has an almost stinging sensation, followed by a burning numbness. Perhaps if this was packed in a tooth it would work but I could feel that burning numb sensation on the tip of my tongue all day long. Other family members said the same thing, though it did not bother my youngest son..

We had so much fun with this plant last year that we had to plant it again this year. If you chew the flower, beware. It does numb your mouth much more than the leaves and my husband had a hard time swallowing for a few minutes, but we all had a good laugh out of it. It is certainly a fun plant to have and grow. It is also known as the "eyeball" plant because the flowers look like eyeballs..
