I've never planted any other type, but these seem to work well. large heads attract tons of bees, some of my cukes climbed up the stalks, seeds are tasty. they do get 10 ft tall, so plant in a spot that won't shade other plants that need full sun (it seemed like a few of my peas had their season extended because they were in their shade when it got hot...).

Unbelievable! Review by Shannon

I planted 17 of them along a fence. The average height was about 10 feet tall with three of them reaching 13 feet. As stated in another review they produce abundant seeds and attract boat loads of bees. I left the pods for the cardinals and the squirrels. Cut them down today and resorted to using a chain saw to do it. The biggest stem was almost 5 inches across at ground level. More like cutting small trees than flowers. .

in 2010 I grew ten of these. they grew satisfyingly tall though I'm not sure they grew ten feet. I watered them well and i got big sunflower heads. All of them lost their petals and were really starting to bend down by the weight of the head. That should have been the indicator that I should have harvested it .Rain came and messed up all but three and but they had good plump seeds. Next year in 2011 I have plated some more and I have learned that they were drought tolerant so I didn't water them much especially when it was time to harvest. The result, hard seed coats with small and chewy nut. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES PEOPLE!!! so water em' well even though they are drought tolerant so you can get nice and full seeds AND harvest them when they're starting to ben over and when you chew on a seed it cracks. cut off the head and dry them for like three weeks or so in paper bags in a dry place , then you will have good seed. Don't leave it to dry on the stalks If you are expecting rain or if you have morning dew , if they get wet it will become moldy..
