Melrose Pepper

PP152

This is a superb heirloom frying pepper brought from Italy years ago. The 4-inch fruit turn brilliant red and start producing very early with flavor that is rich, flavorful, and very sweet. Great fried or fresh, a true Italian variety that seems to have been widely grown in the Chicago area. We have had many requests for this pepper.

Contains 25 heirloom seeds

I love this pepper Review by shelleybean

This is a nice frying variety. The plants are quite small, 18 inches or under. They ripen red very early compared to other peppers and have very sweet flavor when fully ripe. Good fresh or cooked and even pickled! Glad to see them back in the catalog! Thanks!.

Good fresh, great Fried! Review by Illia

Although some of the family didn't like their strong but sweet flavor when eaten raw, these are always a favorite when fried. They're candy-sweet and just simply delicious as well as very reliable plants!.

Sweet - like red delicious apple. Review by Matt SF

Overall Rating

Without a doubt, this is the best pepper I've ever tried. I was never a big bell pepper (of any color) person and only ate them in salads for the nutritional value or to add a splash of color. But this pepper honestly changed my mind to the point that I eat them raw straight out of the garden. They're very sweet, and in my opinion, have a taste similar to a red delicious apple. Will be in my garden for many years to come..

Childhood favourite Review by Cosbakes

Overall Rating

I spent my childhood going to a vegetable market with my mother called Tom Naples. It was located in Melrose Park, Il which is about 10 miles outside of Chicago. My brother-in-law grew up in Melrose Park and knew Tom Naples and he claims that Tom developed this pepper and named it after Melrose Park. My brother-in-law is a bit of a story teller, though, so... However, after many trips to Italy, I have found a frying pepper very much, if not exactly like, this pepper. I am so excited to have found seeds for this wonderful pepper that I grew up with. It is great grilled as well as fried tossed with olive oil and salt as well as some crushed garlic if you want. This is indeed a Chicago area Italian specialty. Great on beef sandwiches, too!.
