Oregano, Wild Zaatar

HB174

(Origanum syriacum) We offer seeds from Israel for this plant that grows wild in Israel, Jordan and surrounding areas. Doubtless a common herb in Bible times, and still one of the tastiest! It has great flavor that blends hints of Oregano, Thyme and Marjoram. A favorite.

Love this herb! Review by Rachel

Zaa'tar seasoning is a favorite in our house on chicken and on vegetables, so being able to find the correct type of oregano was exciting! Since growing this plant we've done away with using the dry seasoning mix and now just use the fresh Zaatar oregano in it's place.

Growing from seed was a bit interesting the first year - the plant was small and I wasn't able to get much from it. (I would suggest sowing more than one plant if you want to be able to harvest a lot the first year.) However, it grew slowly over the winter and come spring it was huge! (In NE Ohio.) We were able to harvest everything we needed from one plant this past summer. It is so aromatic that every time I do work in the herb garden I end up craving Zaatar chicken now! .

well worth the wait Review by Kevin

The seeds are tiny and it takes time to see if they germinate properly. But if you have the patience, the herb is out of this world in aroma, flavor and taste. And garden pests seem to not like them. I have read that these seeds will last 2 seasons, and as of late July, they show no signs of bolting (unlike my cilantro and basil). I have been harvesting the herb since July. So though it might b slow, it will produce over the long haul. I highly recommend this seed..
