Russian Red or Ragged Jack

KA103

Very tender and mild, a pre-1885 heirloom variety. Oak type leaves have a red tinge, and stems are a purplish-red. One of our favorite kales. Great flavor.

We sowed seed in the spring and we are still getting leaves off. Taste changed after first really hard frost to a more mild flavor..

I grew this beautiful kale last fall, and we used it in soups and stews all winter. We harvest the outside leaves, and it just keeps on sprouting. This spring, our chickens enjoyed the last of it, flowers, seeds and all. It looks beautiful in a bed or border mixed with giant red mustard..

This was a first for me growing it my family loves it. We stir fry it in Sesame oil and add ginger to. It is very good. We also make a great kale slaw with dried cranberries. Will be growing again next year..

Underrated Green Review by Unknown

A lot of people that I've talked to don't like to grow this variety because it's too weedy and common looking, but I love it. It may look a little weedy, but it also grows like a weed--taking little to no care in my garden. We don't eat it fresh the way that we do other types of kale, but it is great in stir fries and gives soup a the best, most delicious kale flavor. It does taste much better after a light frost..

The best tasting kale there is! Review by BeckyW

This is our first year growing Russian Red kale, although we've grown several other different varieties in past years. It is gorgeous in the garden and a very "sweet" kale.
We planted it in March here in Colorado z5a - it was snowed on, frosted on for months and has grown beautifully. No bugs bother it. It has become our very favorite kale and will be our standard every year..

This is, without doubt, the best tasting kale I've ever had. I've taken to eating it for breakfast as I water the garden. I like it so well, I'm buying more to plant for this season.
I am in so Fla and the plants in the ground are a month old but I sure don't want to run out. Yummy..

I don't know why anyone would think this a weed. The leaves are a beautiful color and shape. The picture on the seed packet doesn't do it justice, and I wish I could post a picture here in the review. It is very large, and overshadows the plants behind it. I bought the European Mesclun, and this is the most common and most productive of the varieties in that mix. We've made two huge batches of kale chips, one with olive oil and one with chili oil. .
