| BITTER MELON
(Momordica charantia) Easy to grow, but a challenge to germinate. Soak seeds for 24 hours or until they swell up, or carefully remove the outer seed coat with a sharp, thin blade. Sow indoors for transplants or direct-seed outdoors, sowing about three quarters of an inch deep. Warm conditions, ample moisture, soil fertility, and full sun are needed for germination and growth. Once the seedlings appear, grow like cucumbers. Responds well to trellising to conserve space. Whitish-green, bumpy fruit turn a beautiful deep orange. When overripe they pop open. The seeds are covered in a good amount of bright-red gell that tastes like cherry candy. AKA Balsam pear, it has been used medicinally for hundreds of years. A delicious vegetable used in many Asian dishes. 20 seeds per packet.
