Spanish Red Roja
This hard-neck was introduced in the 1800's and was originally called "Greek Garlic". Spanish Roja is quickly becoming a popular gourmet garlic. The plant has thick blue-green stalks with moderately spreading, thick leaves. Bulbs are generally 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inches in diameter. Thin bulb wrappers with colors from light brown to teak with purple. While cloves can be brownish, ours is a lighter strain. Spanish Roja has a strong, hot spicy flavor. It does not grow well in warm or damp climates, it needs a cold winter climate.
