| TURNIPS
(B. rapa) 600 seeds per packet. Best grown as an autumn crop, planted a 4-8 weeks before first frost of fall. Sow in place, covering the seed no more than a quarter inch or so. Thin the plants to stand at least 4-6 inches apart in all directions. Thinnings may be used as greens if sufficiently large; an occasional leaf can also be picked from among the tender leaves emerging in the centers of larger plants. Turnips may be sown in early spring and will succeed where there is sufficient cooler weather for 60-75 days after sowing. Prolonged hot weather makes ripening turnips strong-tasting and woody.

Petrowski
New!
A nice yellow turnip with sweet, flat roots that
mature quickly. In 1916 Burpee's catalog stated,
"A most distinct variety of early maturity. The
flat roots average two and a half to three inches
in diameter, and the skin is a rich deep orange-yellow,
very smooth and entirely free from small
rootlets. The firm solid flesh is fine-grained, crisp,
light orange-yellow in color, and having a flavor
which is much richer and sweeter than any of
the early white-fleshed sorts." This old turnip was
introduced to England in 1879 by Suttons, who
imported it from Germany, and around 1915 this
variety was very important in Alaskan agriculture.
A great variety for home and market.
