Thai Red Roselle

RS101

(Hibiscus sabdariffa) A valuable plant for making cranberry-flavored bright red beverages, jelly, pie and tea. Much grown in Asia and the mid-east as the flavor is wonderful. A tasty sauce can be made by boiling and sweetening the fleshy calyxes; the leaves are also used to make a drink. The entire plant of this Hibiscus is red and very beautiful. Start early, unless you live in the far-south. Citrus-flavored flowers are delicious on frozen deserts. This plant has too many uses to name here. Collected in Thailand.

Contains 15 heirloom seeds

A good variety Review by Unknown

Overall Rating

We grew this variety this year and made the "sorrel drink" from it, it was very nice with a subtle taste and good color. In the past I have grown another variety that had fleshier calyxes but I do not remember what it was..

love this plant, now what? Review by Unknown

This is a beautiful plant, and trouble free here in northern california. I would like to use the flowers for tea, but do I use the unopened bud, the full flower or after the bloom?
I am definitely planting more of these everywhere next year..

When exactly does one harvest the flowers for drying or making tea, when they are in tight buds, when they are blooming, after they bloom? The plant is gorgeous and easy to care for, I'm going to plant a bunch of them next year..

Using Thai Roselle Review by Cyn

Overall Rating

We learned the hard way to pick the fruits fairly soon after the flower is spent. If you don't, the flower still tucked inside the calyx will begin to mold. That makes it difficult to use the calyx later. But it never hurts to save a few pods for next year's seeds anyway! Go to thai-recipes-today.com for ways to make the roselle drink..

We have to start this kind of items inside in our area of NW Indiana. We did this last year maybe a little too early. The plants did well, but the budding started too late in the season. We will grow them again next year, We love the drink..
