The favorite BLT tomato. Rich purple (smoky?)tomato flavor. Yield was okay. Came on early and each plant yielded some huge 2# fruits, then tapered off quite a bit. Pretty much done by Labor Day. Will plant more this year..

My Favorite Tomato! Review by Unknown
Overall Rating
If I could only grow one tomato it would be Cherokee Purple. I grow upwards of 20 varieties every year (I love to experiment with all the heirloom varieties) but this is the only one I never take off my grow list. It takes some getting use to the dark color (looks a bit rotten) but has the best flavor of any tomato I have ever eaten--including Brandywine and Caspian Pink (other good varieties). It is not super prolific, (though you get decent yields)and it can sometimes be a bit hard to tell if it is ripe (because of the color), but when you get one that is just right, it can not be beat for flavor!.

Cherokee Purple is a hardy tomato in Cincinnat, Ohio. Even if it gets a disease it still survives. I am a 100% organic gardener who is still learning how to prevent diseases better. Tastes wonderful, one that is always on my to grow list!!!!.

Not good for cooler areas in SF Bay Area Review by Unknown
Overall Rating
I tried this in 2009 and it did produce well, but the problem was the flavor didn't live up to the bill. I don't know if this is because of the cooler climate we have here during the first 1/2 of summer (I'm 10 miles east of the Golden Gate). I may try it once more so see if I get different results. Beautiful looking, but the flavor was lacking..

Best Tomato I Have Eaten Review by Unknown
Overall Rating
I grew these for the 1st time in 2009. Due to losses from a late frost, I only had three plants survive. The first time I sank my teeth into this tomato, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I love tomatos and have eaten many varieties over the years in different parts of the country. This will be my main eating tomato I will be planting from now on. Fruits were not smooth, I've seen prettier tomatos, but you can't eat pretty. Love these tomatos..

Huge, Gorgeous, tasty Review by Unknown
Overall Rating
I had 2 of these plants growing in my backyard garden. The stems grew as thick as my thumb and the fruit! Bunches of 3 and 4 tomatoes--and each tomato as big as my hand, and I got 2 crops like this! They may be wrinkled, but once you taste them, these are the prettiest tomato in the garden.
The only downside is the crazy neighborhood possum ate half of them at first blush. He never touched the other varieties! I guess they're possum approved!.

Fantastic Taste! Review by SD Tomato Lover
Overall Rating
We grew seedlings in San Diego in 2009, planted them on April 12, 2009 and picked the last one's in Feb. of 2010! They just kept going and going and going. Fat, meaty beefy tomatoes and a very smooth, sweet taste. If I could grow only one kind, this would be it. This year I've got 6 plants of these, plus experimenting with three other black varities and Brandywines to see which I love more....

disappointed Review by Unknown
Overall Rating
Of all the tomato seeds I purchased this year, this variety has been a disappointment. I don't have fruits yet, but of 20 plants, only 1 is still standing. the seedlings were weak in comparison with the vigor of all the other varieties I bought. I hope the fruit from the 1 remaining is as good as everyone says it is!.

Unbelievable flavor Review by Amei
Overall Rating
These were the last tomatoes that I planted this year and I am already eating them. A lot of mine are catfacing, but some aren't and they are very pretty. Of course beauty is only as good as the flavor and these are the sweetest tastiest tomatoes I have ever grown. I thought Brandywine was the best, but these are even better..

Good tomatoes, limited production Review by Unknown
Overall Rating
The first thing I noticed about these plants when I set them outside was that they struggled more to get established than did the other varieties. I lost several of them that way. They grew more slowly than the other varieties I planted, and on the average produced less, at least through this point in the season. The tomatoes are very tasty though. For this reason I'd say it's a good one to try, as long as you aren't expecting very many tomatoes per plant and are vigilant with them at the outset..

My new favorite tomato Review by Unknown

I absolutely LOVE this tomato! I have never had a tastier tomato. I got up to six fruit on each bunch and they are beautiful. I planted a dozen and each of them thrived and produced. I am planning on planting even more next year. I can't say enough good things about it. LOVE IT!.

A little disappointed Review by Unknown
Overall Rating
I had great success with two other varieties this year(Green Zebra and Missouri Pink Love Apple) but for some reason the Cherokee Purple just did not do well. The plants were small and never caught up to the other varieties in size and health. I did manage to eke out a couple of smaller fruits which were very good.
I would still recommend this variety since it is quite tasty, but don't rely on it for a full harvest..

My absolute favorite slicing tomato Review by Unknown
Overall Rating
I grew 6 of these for the first time 3 summer ago. Each year, I've added more while still experimenting with other varieties for slicing. This summer, I'm not even going to bother with other varieties. The flavor of the Cherokee just bursts in your mouth. No other variety that I've tried (to include Arkansas Traveler and Brandywine) even comes close. In all fairness, they aren't a particularly pretty tomato. Down in here in the AR River Valley area of Arkansas, they are prone to cracking. I describe the color as that of someone who was on the wrong end of a bar fight. I'd say production is about average. If you haven't tried them, you definitely need to grow them at least once..

Poor performance in drought Review by James in south central Kentucky
Overall Rating
We had a hot drought this summer and my Cherokee Purples did not do well. One plant produced a few mishapen, stunted fruit and the other did not bloom at all. Both vines did not grow as vigorously as other varieties under the same growing conditions. It seemed to be a tough year for tomatoes overall locally but the Cherokee Purple was my worst performer by far. I don't think I had a single fruit make it to the table. But I'll give it another try this year as it has an excellent reputation and the growing conditions this past summer were far from ideal..

Fabulous flavor, our favorite this year Review by Just an amateur
Overall Rating
We live in Northern California, where there is some serious heat, and these fruit have been our jealously guarded prizes. We are reluctant to share, even with family. Yield is not prolific, but fruit are good size, and worth the wait. Put a slice of this with some apple wood smoked thick cut bacon, and suddenly the world is a good place again. Juicy, sweet, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. My wife made some tomato tarts with four different varieties, as a taste test, and the unanimous winner was the cherokee purple tart. And, I place the cherokee purple sliced on my handmade pizza which is then grilled in the barbecue, with mesquite and cherry chips, and, well I know what heaven's going to be like, because we just tasted it. .

I started growing these 6 yrs ago.....Consistantly one of my heaviest producers .. Never had a blight or cracking problem, and the taste, outstanding slicer, great mater for sandwiches........ This one stays on my 'every yr' list (I have about 6 that are on that one, total about 10 other varieties, 25-30 plants total).

delicious and great for cooler CA Bay Area Review by Oaktown garden girl
Overall Rating
I've grown this tomato two years in a row in Oakland, CA, and I can't say enough about it. This is definitely a "must-grow" in this area. The past two years have been awful for gardeners here, but the Cherokee purple tomato produced much more than my other tomatoes, and had very little cracking or disease problems. Taste tests against a wide variety of other tomatoes have people asking "Oh my gosh, what kind is that!!!???". The flavor is rich and complex and delightfully yummy. Definitely an 'eat-off-the-vine' variety. I did find that there was a wide disparity in fruit size--some almost like beefsteaks, while others were quite small, but all were equally tasty. I will be growing this every year from now on!.

Great tomato Review by Paul
Overall Rating
I sell out of these every time I take them to market. They're not quite as big as Paul Robeson but they are a little easier to grow and aren't really heavy feeders. I almost never have to side dress with compost like I do some other varieties of tomatoes. These are a good size for sandwiches and are one of the best for drying. .
