Violet Jasper or Tzi Bi U Tomato

TP127

When these little Oriental jewels ripen, your eyes will be stunned
with color. They have pretty violet-purple fruit with iridescent
green streaks! Fruit weigh 1-3 ounces, are smooth and have good
tasting, dark purplish-red flesh. This variety will also amaze you
with its yield: it’s not only high, but incredibly high, being one of
the most productive tomatoes we have grown. A great variety
for marketing. Introduced to you from China along with its twin
sister “Topaz”; see our yellow tomato section.

Super productive, mixed qualities Review by Unknown

Matured July 3rd - faster than Early Girl! Sweet flavor, thick skins and somewhat grainy wall flesh but they are SO PRETTY, from my 18 varieties these are the most eye catching. Bright Green around the seeds. HUGE harvest..

Gorgeous, but mushy!!! Ornamental only! Review by Unknown

Overall Rating

I have grown heirloom tomatoes for years, and I chose this purely because it was lovely! The flavor is neglible, and they are mushy! None of the other tomatoes I have grown this year in the same bed are! Why waste garden space, when there are so many others equally as beautiful, and extremely flavorful..

a garden spectacle Review by Unknown

the violet jasper tomato (or tzi bi u, if you like) is certainly an unique cultivar. the plants are very sturdy and grow to be quite large if you allow them. fruits appear in clusters early in the tomato season, and once a plant gets going it's truly a sight to behold. the fruits start out darker green stripes on that familiar unripe tomato green, and as they mature, the dark green stripes become slightly opalescent and the flesh darkens dramatically. they actually look like jewels. however, i found the fruits less than adequate for fresh eating. it's difficult to gauge their ripeness and they tend to get a bit mushy. but i used them in an okra stew and also to make some salsa fresca. they worked well in a culinary application and they are visual striking..

good ornamental for baking Review by Max

Overall Rating

These are highly productive and gorgeous little tomatoes, little workhorses. The one fault is that flavor and texture can be lacking and is often kind of mushy so not great for using them fresh, however, I often used them in baking dishes where their green splotches looked great and their flavor actually became more pronounced and were much better suited in that condition. Layer some in a frittata and they look very pretty. .

Beautiful, Prolific, Popular at Market Review by OKFarmgirl

We had a rough year with drought conditions in 2010, but these beautiful tomatoes produced well anyway. The fruits are stunning, and was the number one commented-on tomato we sold at market. They really helped sell our mixed cherry baskets. Highly recommended both for color and flavor!.

Actually I disagree with the posts of them being tastless. We grew ours organically and the taste was excellent. Its sister topaz wasn't tasty until late in the season then the taste was also excellent..The skin is thick but works great for sish ka bobs. Also made excellent salsa. Will grow again..

Beautiful little tomatoes Review by Robyn

Overall Rating

Easily the prettiest tomato I've ever seen, and while rather small, a steady producer that got started before any of the other types. I do agree that the skin is a little tough, but everyone who's tasted these has raved about the flavor. Will plant more of these next year..

Excellent in high desert conditions Review by gottagarden

Overall Rating

This was the first tomato to set fruit and has been the most prolific variety of the 20 plus varieties I grew this year. It has done well in a sandy alkaline soil and in soils improved with compost. It shows good resistance to blight which decimated several other varieties of tomatoes in my garden. Despite erratic weather none of the fruits have split. The flavor is slighly earthy, mildly acidic, and is best from fruits that are allowed to ripen completely on the plants..
