Old Homestead (Kentucky Wonder)

65 days. This homesteaders’ heirloom was first mentioned
in The Country Gentleman magazine in 1864
under the name of Texas Pole. It was not until 1877

is a pole bean with 6”- 8” green pods that are very tender
when cooked and have a great flavor. In 1896 Peter
Henderson & Co. said, “This we regard as far ahead
of any other green Pole Bean.” They also said it was 10

Good Pole Bean Review by Ft2Judy

This is a highly productive variety. You must pick the pods when they are young or the beans will get stringy..

Trouble with Mites Review by Unknown

Overall Rating

It was probably my fault, because I didn't plant this until July, and July in Missouri is very hot. This is because I didn't dig my second garden area until then, as my first main garden was full. I live in the city, and space is at a premium. So, in the 8 foot space between my house and my neighbor's, on the south side, I build a long, narrow bed with a trellis in it to take advantage of vertical space and grow vining vegetables, ie, cukes and beans. (this location is too hot to grow peas).

Anyway, I'm trying it again, in a different location. I'll be sure and check it more carefully, and give it a hard spray with the hose daily at the first sign of mites..

Beetle hardy, good producer Review by cindy

Overall Rating

I have grown this variety now for three seasons. Must have a tall trellis. I use jute string to give them something to climb. Has grown over 8' tall. Makes a beautiful wall of green. Beans are stringy if not picked early. Stands up well to the summer beetle infestation in Missouri. .

They germinate like they're on steroids! Review by Krista

I started mine indoors at the end of May, they were a foot tall by the next week. I'm just starting to get green beans, and they taste good. Will definitely grow again next year. .
