Sikkim Cucumber

CU124

The historic cucumber of Sikkim. Fat, large fruit can reach several pounds in size. The ripe fruit is a unique rusty red color and is good eaten cooked or raw. In Asia, cucumbers are often stir-fried and are quite tasty. This variety is grown in the Himalayas of Sikkim and Nepal. Sir Joseph Hooker first discovered it in the eastern Himalayas in 1848. Here is part of what he wrote about it: “So abundant were the fruits, that for days together I saw gnawed fruits lying by the natives’ paths by the thousands, and every man, woman and child seemed engaged throughout the
day in devouring them.”

Contains 25-35 heirloom seeds

Sikkim is worth growing Review by manifest son

Overall Rating

I grew them for 2009 and I loved the bright flavor and crisp texture. I tried some in a container and they didn't grow well even with good sun. I planted one in May in the ground and it took right off. I think it would have taken over the neighborhood except for the unseasonably cool August we had in Missouri. Once the sun was not as intense the growth slowed considerably. For me it was a little finicky but worth it. I will give them a try again this year..

Great Unique Fruit, Smaller Yields Review by Unknown

Overall Rating

Regardless of the small yields I got the first season I planted this, It will be one of the seeds I order each and every year (another top choice that I have ordered for three years now is the Anana's Noire Tomato). The Sikkim suffered slightly this season, but will give it another chance, I believe our hot but dry season and my inability to water daily may have stunted the fruit size a bit, however it tastes like a cucumber although it looks like something out of this world. I describe it as having crackle paint rusty brown skin. Truly an amazing plant, and great for knocking the socks off your friends when you give them a gift of the fruit..
